An Antichrist or The Antichrist? February 7, 2007

Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda. I first saw him on the Today Show a couple of months back. Claiming to be the “incarnated” Messiah, he has attracted numerous followers in Florida, Puerto Rico and a smattering of other places around the world.
Harmless or the next David Koresh?
In a story by Newsweek/MSNBC by Arian Campo-Flores on 2/5/2007, Campo-Flores reveals his research on this self-proclaimed “anti-christ.”
“In 1998, [Jose Luis] de Jesus [Miranda] avowed that he was the reincarnation of the Apostle Paul. Two years ago at Growing in Grace’s world convention in Venezuela, he declared himself Christ. And just last week, he called himself the Antichrist and revealed a “666″ tattooed on his forearm. His explanation: that, as the second coming of Christ, he rejects the continued worship of Jesus of Nazareth.”
What does the Bible have to say about this?
“Children, it’s the end of time. You’ve heard that an antichrist is coming. Certainly, many antichrists are already here. That’s how we know it’s the end of time. They left us. However, they were never really part of us. If they had been, they would have stayed with us. But by leaving they made it clear that none of them were part of us. The Holy One has anointed you, so all of you have knowledge. I’m writing to you because you know the truth, not because you don’t know the truth. You know that no lie ever comes from the truth. Who is a liar? Who else but the person who rejects Jesus as the Messiah? The person who rejects the Father and the Son is an antichrist. Everyone who rejects the Son doesn’t have the Father either. The person who acknowledges the Son also has the Father. Make sure that the message you heard from the beginning lives in you. If that message lives in you, you will also live in the Son and in the Father. (I John 2:18-24; God’s Word Translation; Emphasis Added)
Since de Jesus Miranda rejects Jesus of Nazareth, he is indeed “an antichrist.” However, the question that remains is if he is “an” antichrist or “the” antichrist? Most likely, he’s one of many who will arrive in the last days proclaiming to be Jesus or to outwardly oppose the true Jesus of Nazareth. However, it’s important that all of us keep a watch out for antichrists and help those who are weak in faith to resist the temptation to follow them.
Listen to what Jesus had to say and heed His warning! Tell others!
“At that time don’t believe anyone who tells you, ‘Here is the Messiah!’ or ‘There he is!’ False messiahs and false prophets will appear. They will work miraculous signs and do wonderful things to deceive, if possible, those whom God has chosen. Be on your guard! I have told you everything before it happens. (Mark 13:21-23; God’s Word Translation)
The End Times Journal has attempted to contact de Jesus Miranda to share these Bible verses with him and his staff. They have rejected any attempts to share the truth with them.

Great Barrier Reef: Gone by 2050? February 3, 2007

Could the Great Barrier Reef disappear? Could it become a vast wasteland?
Snorklers and scuba divers beware. In a new article by Reuters, Australian scientists explain that not only is the Great Barrier Reef at grave risk but all the world’s great reefs.
From Reuters – 2/2/2007
“Coral bleaching caused by rising temperatures has struck many reefs around the world, hitting the Indian Ocean, parts of the Caribbean and off Australia. It occurs when corals living at the edge of their temperature tolerance expel the tiny animals that live inside, turning colorless and exposing their calcium skeletons inside… Death follows unless the water soon cools. Global warming bringing temperature rises of between 2 to 3 degrees Celsius (3.6 to 4.8 Fahrenheit) makes future salvation less likely.”
“The actual trajectory we’ve seen in the arctic over the last two years if you follow that, that implies that the arctic ice cap will be gone in the next 5 to 15 years,” [Australian Scientist] Flannery told Australian radio. “There’s a 10 per cent chance of truly catastrophic rises in temperatures.”
What’s not explored in the article is the actual impact on ocean life as a whole if the reefs begin to die. We already know that massive “dead zones” (see related article) in the world are on the rise. Will more ocean life die as a result of the death of the reefs or simply from the rising ocean temperatures? Will we somehow be spared?

Think that Evangelical Christians are the only ones thinking about the End Times?
With the latest dire report on global warming and the movement of the Doomsday Clock forward to 5 minutes before midnight, it’s not just Christians who worry that we may be approaching the end of life on the Earth.
What is the Doomsday Clock?
According to Wikipedia:
The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clockface maintained since 1947 by the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago. It uses the analogy of the human race being at a time that is “minutes to midnight” where midnight represents destruction by nuclear war.
As Wikipedia describes, on January 17, 2007, the clock was moved forward by 2 minutes to reflect the growing nuclear threat and tensions between the US and North Korea, an increased emphasis on nuclear weapons by the US and nearly 26,000 nuclear weapons that remain from the Cold War era.

Global Warming: A Doomsday Event?
Ten years ago, many questioned the threat of global warming. Today, nearly all scientists grimly agree that we humans are destroying our Earth at an alarming rate through the emission of greenhouse gases. Widespread flooding, extreme temperatures and extinction of species are all possible consquences to our current actions.

What Does This Mean?
Perhaps God is allowing us to all plainly see the threat that we pose to ourselves and our environment. Perhaps the blinders are being cast off of the nonchristian and Christian communities alike. Perhaps, in His grace and mercy, He’s helping us to all see that the Last Days are here. What can be our response? To love God and love others. To work to repair the damage that we have caused — not just environmentally, but physically, emotionally and spiritually as well! To accept Jesus and decide to follow Him.
Google: Future “Big Brother”? November 7, 2006

The internet will hold so much digital data in five years that it will be possible to find out what an individual was doing at a specific time and place, an expert said yesterday.
Nigel Gilbert, a professor heading a Royal Academy of Engineering study into surveillance, said people would be able to sit down and type into Google “what was a particular individual doing at 2.30 yesterday and would get an answer”.
The answer would come from a range of data, for instance video recordings or databanks which store readings from electronic chips. Such chips embedded in people’s clothes could track their movements. He told a privacy conference the internet would be capable of holding huge amounts of data very cheaply and patterns of information could be extracted very quickly. “Everything can be recorded for ever,” he said.

Ocean ‘dead zones’ increasing fast October 25, 2006

In marine biology terms, ‘dead zones’ are oxygen-deficient coastal areas. When there’s no oxygen, fish and other aquatic life cannot survive.
Sadly, the number of dead zones is rapidly increasing around the world. Caused by fossil fuels, pollution, other contaminants and possibly influenced by global warming, worldwide dead zones have increased to 200 — up from 149 only two years ago.
MSNBC reported on October 23, 2006, that these dead zones have now spread around the world at an alarming rate.
“Today, the best known is in the Gulf of Mexico, where fertilizers and other algae-multiplying nutrients are dumped by the Mississippi River.
“Newly observed dead zones include ones in:
- Archipelago Sea, Finland
- Fosu Lagoon, Ghana
- Pearl River Estuary and Changjiang River, China
- Mersey Estuary, United Kingdom
- Elefsis Bay, Greece
- Paracas Bay, Peru
- Mondego River, Portugal
- Montevideo Bay, Uruguay
- Western Indian Shelf.
What’s the impact? United Nations experts warn that “these areas are fast becoming major threats to fish stocks and thus to the people who depend upon fisheries for food and livelihoods.”

Coral Reefs Dying from Global Warming October 25, 2006

Mat Probasco of the Associated Press reported on October, 25, 2006, that “researchers fear more than half the world’s coral reefs could die in less than 25 years and say global warming may at least partly to blame.”
“Last year’s coral loss in the Caribbean waters supports predictions that 60 percent of the world’s coral could die within a quarter century, said Tyler Smith of the University of the Virgin Islands.”
“Up to 30 percent of the world’s coral reefs have died in the last 50 years, and another 30 percent are severely damaged, said Smith, who studies coral health in the U.S. Virgin Islands and collaborates with researchers globally.”
